The first step in the supply chain is the genetics. In the Hemp industry, we refer to these as varieties or varietals.

Varieties are currently grown for four base materials:

  • Bast Fiber - the outer bark of the hemp stalk

  • Hurd - the inner, woody core, of the hemp stalk

  • Flower - the buds near the top of the plant

  • Grain - the seed developed out of the buds

Once you have decided which material you wish to produce.

Your next step in choosing the variety, it to consider your climate.

Though cannabis has been seen to grow in non-native environments. If you want an ideal crop, with a smaller risk of losing your investment.

It would be wise to select genetics which have been bred in a climate similar to your own.
